Today is the last chance to buy used DVDs from Netflix.
I’m disappointed to see that program end. I don’t buy many DVDs (How many times are you really going to watch a given movie?) but when there was something I really liked, buying it from Netflix was always a good choice, even cheaper than Amazon.

You’d be surprised how often, especially if you have kids.
But even aside from the girls’ interest in watching well-loved movies again and again, I’ve found that a good movie is like a good book. It can be enjoyed over and over, and each time you do so, you find new things to appreciate in it that you weren’t ready to see other times you’ve watched. As we grow older, we identify with different characters and the situations they’re in, and gradually we find that our understanding of the story has shifted so that, in a sense, it is no longer the same movie.
Other movies are simply part of the liturgy; it’s almost a requirement to watch life-affirming films like “It’s a Wonderful Life,” or the movies that convey the interconnectedness of humanity, like “A Christmas Carol.”
And lastly, some movies are just something that we have because we regard them as a touchstone for us of some sorts. I have the original Star Wars trilogy on videotape, and many Looney Tunes on DVD, because I want to share the experience with my children.
Most movies, and most TV shows, aren’t nearly that enduring, and I’m sorry that we have some of the movies we do own, but there are those happy exceptions, and they make the overall collection worth having.
