Another Drop in the Bucket

After getting home from Shore Leave on Monday, I stopped for groceries at the store just up the road. While I was there, I discovered that the store will be closing permanently on Thursday.
I’m blessed to live in a part of the world where although this is inconvenient, it’s not a huge deal. It’s not like I have to drive 40 miles to the next town for my groceries or walk a day each way. The store that’s closing is part of a fairly large chain which seems to have a location in every strip mall in a 100 mile radius. And there’s a lot of strip malls in this area – the two nearest alternate locations are both less than three miles away.
So although it’s inconvenient, it’s not a huge disaster for me. Of course, the 100 people who likely worked there may have a somewhat different perspective.
I’m sure glad we’re not in a recession!

  1. They’re just putting it out of its misery. Even before Royal Ahold put the Stop ‘n Shop management in control of Giant-Landover, Fox Chapel was in trouble.
When my sister was a teenager, she had an aquarium with tropical fish. The X-Ray Catfish used to get picked on by the other fish. They didn’t have the decency to just kill it; they’d take little nips out of its fins.
It was like that with the Fox Chapel Giant. They’d close the fish counter. They left customer service entirely to the store managers, so customers had to wait around for help.
The property management hasn’t done a great job attracting tenants for the shopping center, either, but I think it’s the sale of the trailer parks to developers that was the final nail in the store’s coffin.
