Sonny's Viper

I don’t remember the exact details of the conversation, but during the 2007 Farpoint convention, I found myself talking with Sonny Wright about his idea for building a replica of a Colonial Viper from Battlestar Galactica. At one point, he told me, “If you guys book a Galactica guest, I’ll build a viper.”
I immediately pointed out that Richard Hatch was one of Farpoint’s guests that year and Sonny therefore owed me a viper.
In June(?), Farpoint added James Callis (the new Galactica’s Gaius Baltar) to the 2008 guest line-up. When I saw Sonny a few weeks later at Shore Leave, he told me he’d already started working out how to build the viper.
Sonny and his team arrived at Farpoint last Friday evening and worked through the night to assemble the pieces. By Saturday, there was a viper parked at the end of the hallway, right outside the main ballroom.
Ain’t she a beauty?

  1. Thanks Blair:)
Actually equal thanks goes out to the USS Sovereign. My fan club chapter. They sponsored it. I might have been lead guy on the project, but nothing happens without them involved. It was fun for all of us!! Hats off you and the rest of the committee for a great convention this year 🙂
    Sonny

  2. Thanks Blair for having us. Sonny is the Borg aboard the Sovereign, so we don’t think there is anything he can’t do. We salute you and the Far Point committee for giving us the incentive to build. As always we enjoyed ourselves; and that’s what is it all about for us. Thank you for celebrating our master builder, and the crew of Sovereign for doing what we do.
    Blackkat 🙂

  3. My apologies for the oversight. That viper is a thing of beauty and something all of you should be proud of.
Just don’t forget: You promised me a photo of your garage with the viper’s nose sticking out. 🙂

  4. dood! sweet! next we shall build a functioning one.. but that’s only if you get Six or Apollo to Shoreleave 😉
i’ll start rounding up some mechanical engineers.

  5. cough
Uh, Luke? You owe me a functioning viper. 🙂
Jamie Bamber (Apollo) was a guest at Shore Leave 28 (go to http://www.shore-leave.com/photos.htm and scroll down a bit for the link to the photo).
There’s no photo on the web site, but I believe Tricia Helfer (Six) was a guest at Shore Leave 26. She was the replacement guest for Mary McDonnell (President Laura Roslin) who had a last minute work commitment.
This is exactly how Sonny wound up owing me one for Farpoint. 🙂

  6. well i mean from here on. and i gotta see them. i was still in grade school back then, so past appearances do not count.
wish i would have seen them!
