Gee, Thanks

Someone I thought was a friend sent me another of those stupid chain letters with the supposedly inspirational poems. Those things are annoying enough, but this was one of the threatening ones. Along with the inspirational stuff, the chain letter promises good fortune if you forward it to your friends. But if you don’t forward it, the letter goes on to say something bad will happen to you.

It’s not the first time someone’s sent me one of these, and it probably won’t be the last, but it does raises a question: If I’m a friend, why would you send me a threatening email? And if I’m not a friend, why are you sending me email in the first place?

What really bothers me though is the note he added at the beginning of the email. It says that he hates getting these emails too. Apparently he discarded it, but a few minutes later he nearly wrecked his car. Rather than take any chances, he decided to forward it to a group of friends.

So the outcome is that in his mind, he’s no longer in danger. I guess that means the rest of us are all in danger instead.

What a pal.

  1. I think a whole new chainletter needs to be written.
Basically the chain letter will say that a powerful blessing and curse has been placed on the chain letter. Those who follow its demands will be free from the curses for not forwarding any future chain letter they receive. The ultimate cure-all that will allow them to ignore all future chain letters without punishment. Those who don’t follow the demands, though, will be cursed with the curses of all chain letters they have ever forwarded. (Yes, harsh, but there’s a reason…wait for it.)
This chain letter will demand the recipient of the email to forward it to as many people as they can think of who have ever sent a chain letter to them, except for the sender of this cure-all chain-letter of course, though the sender is now immune anyway. If they can’t think of anyone who has ever sent them a chain letter, that’s where the kicker kicks in. They’re stuck. Somebody received a chain letter from them, meaning they wrote it.
There will be an added provision that you must be able to forward it to more people than chain letters you have ever written, or the curse will kick in, regardless of the number of people you can forward it to. (I know if I write this I can forward it to more than one person. Those who initially write chain letters are bound to receive them occasionally too, but they better hope they receive them from enough people, or they’re in trouble!
Not that I think that this would work. But wouldn’t it be cool to curse all the writers of chain letters in this manner? Meanwhile making everyone else in the universe immune from future chain letters. I’m wondering if I know anyone in the Wicca/Pagan community that could actually make the chain letter have this power..
