The premise of the movie Jumper is that there are people who are able to teleport themselves anywhere in the world by concentrating on the location they want to be in. It wasn’t a great movie, but it’s a fun concept.
Three times in the past week, I’ve come home to find Wylie sitting in the living room, patiently waiting for me to come home. Wylie would very much like to have people believe that he has the power of teleportation.
The problem with Wylie’s claim is that on two of those occasions, the gate at the top of the stairs had been knocked completely over and most recently, the bottom had been pushed out of place.
When I first spotted this card, I noticed a model sailing ship, a stack of books, and a computer keyboard. What really got my attention though was the metallic-looking skull, like something from The Terminator movies. Add in the bit at the bottom where it mentions a theater and I thought for sure it was a promotion for the new Terminator film which opens next weekend.
Looking at the back of the card, it turns out to be a promotion for a new ministry of a local Mega-Church. Along with their multiple locations and frequent radio ads, it turns out they’re also branching out into holding services in area movie theaters.
It’s entirely possible that they’re making a subtle tie to the new movie, Terminator Salvation. Unfortunately, once I figured out what the card was about, the message which crossed my mind was, “Give your life to Christ, or else he’s going to send a killer robot after you.”
I had an opportunity to see the new Star Trek movie on Thursday evening.
Going in, I was concerned, but trying to keep an open mind. The difficulty was that it’s been pretty well publicized that the movie was going to have new actors in the TOS roles. Star Trek: Phase II (formerly Star Trek: New Voyages) has done well with the new actors in familiar roles, so that’s not insurmountable. But there’s a lot of established Trek canon out there (four TV series and 10 movies worth) and anything set in the TOS timeframe has to tread carefully lest the established timeline be contradicted.
Unless you do the unthinkable.
When the movie opens on May 8, some hardcore TOS fans may come away a little disappointed. But new and casual fans may very likely come away with an renewed interest in the franchise.
